⚛ Layering Liquids with Mrs. Giamboi ⚛

What happens when water is mixed
with other liquids?
Have you ever heard the phrase "oil and water don’t mix"?

You will need the following materials:

•  water
• vegetable oil
• a dropper
• red food coloring
• 2 containers with lids

Step #1 Add water to both containers
Step #2 Add a few drops of Vegetable Oil to first container
Step #3 Add a few drops of Red Food coloring to other container
Step #4 Place lids on and Shake

WHAT did you notice?

Did you notice when you added the Red Food coloring to the water how it layered? Did the container with the oil & water mix? What happened when you shook the containers?
Q: What's the meaning of the word "immiscible?"
A: Incapable of being mixed (liquids)
Observing... some AMAZING hands-on Science!

At the SMARTBOARD for a discussion & demonstration,
where Mrs Giamboi brings the exciting world of Science To Life!!!

 Layering liquids...

Time for all good Scientist to write down what they discovered!

What's Happening?
While water often mixes with other liquids to form solutions, oil and water does not. Water molecules are strongly attracted to each other, this is the same for oil, because they are more attracted to their own molecules they just don't mix together. They separate and the oil floats above the water because it has a lower density.
If you really think oil and water belong together then try adding some dish washing liquid or detergent. Detergent is attracted to both water and oil helping them all join together and form something called an emulsion. This is extra handy when washing those greasy dishes, the detergent takes the oil and grime off the plates and into the water, yay! :)

♒ Class Trip to New York Aquarium ♒

Coney Island, Home of the Aquarium Since 1957!
A FUN PLACE TO VISIT!

Just next door from the Aquarium is a true landmark
the most famous coaster in the world

The Cyclone!
The Aquarium is partially opened right now but that didn’t stop us from seeing the exhibits in the conservation center as well as outdoor spaces of sea cliffs where you can see the walrus’, sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, and penguins.

Located on the Boardwalk, in Education Hall  -  we attended a workshop;
Fins & Feathers -
Penguins and fish may share a habitat, but there are stark differences in how they've adapted to survive in the sea. Students will compare and contrast the characteristics of these fascinating animals through bio-fact investigation & group activity.

Fun Facts: The bones of a bird are thin and hollow; therefore
they are much lighter and more efficient for flying.
Birds have feathers, wings, lay eggs and are warm blooded.
 All Hands On!

Penguins do not fly but are exceptional at swimming; they have webbed feet and wings adapted to work in a similar to flippers, the tail is short and wedge shaped.

Feathers are incredibly strong and yet are incredibly flexible.

Penguins keep their skin wind and waterproof by spreading
natural oil over the stiff part of the feathers.
Our Instructor demonstrated this by rubbing Vaseline on paper and spraying it with water.
FUN FACTS: A group of penguins on land is called a “waddle."
When a mother emperor penguin lays her single egg. Then off she goes to the ocean to hunt for food. Papa Penguin stays behind, balancing the egg on his feet and keeping it warm under his belly feathers.
Penguin eggs are smaller than any other bird species.
A penguin’s normal body temperature is approximately 100° F

The Penguin and the ostrich are birds that do not fly!

Penguins do not have teeth. Instead they use their beak to grab and hold wiggling prey.
A penguin wing is called a flipper.

Looking around...  There is something for everyone!

Oh, the many types of fishes and the coral reef display is so beautiful!

WOW, you can stare into the tank for hours.

We enjoyed seeing sea creatures & the coral reef.

So Exciting!!!

The kids had a blast watching the Walrus feeding.

The trainers were fantastic and the Walruses didn’t miss a beat with their tricks.

The aquarium is still in the process of rebuilding after superstorm Sandy hit.
They informed us that they are constructing new exhibits for a
bigger aquarium opening in 2016!

Overall, it was a wonderful day and we cannot wait to go back! :)
